Joel:
I understand your point, but the current logo is not viable for extreme
reductions as needed for icons. It's not square (and the area of the
icons has to be square) and it has too many fine details that are
completely lost when reduced. So, in my opinion, it's impossible to
convert it in an icon without cropping it (well, it is possible, but the
result looks terrible).
I really doubt that making a Tango icon out of the current logo is even
possible. It doesn't have any of the aspects needed for that.
Keep in mind that the icon must work at low resolutions such as 16 or 24
(22 px according Tango).
And I'm afraid that the current logo isn't just suitable for that.
The couple of examples you showed are completely different, and
transforming the logo into something like that is in my opinion, more
harmful than simply showing a part for the whole.
Cutting a part of a logo is a valid transformation. It doesn't introduce
new elements, it only shows a part that can be recognize inside of the
whole visual identity system.
Creating new elements introduce new features that won't be present in
the rest of the system, and that goes against the recognition of a
normalized system.
Besides, I really don't think that is a good idea to have an icon more
complex than the brand itself. It doesn't make sense.
Of course I might be wrong. You're welcome to try and show the results.
