I believe this can be done by creating a header/metadata file of the frames
from the wished footage and of course an asset manager that makes it
possible accessing the storage across a smb/nfs/appletalk network depending
on the on the pipeline where SAN device or NAS device is attached. That way
no files have to be duplicated on the workstation where editing finds place.
That will also make it easier for the access on the storeage since you only
grab the frames you need but not the shole contained footage. If the SAN is
attached on a Gbit network, it shouldn't be a problem but if it is the
bandwith is smaller, integrating a workflow with proxies should suffice for
HDV and HD video. After finishin the montage, by a simple function "Export
as EDL" or "Export from EDL" the whole project can be rendered independantly
from a wokrstation hanging around the network. If it is a pipeline where
on-line jobs are done, that would be tricky. But I don't think that was the
part of the question.
